Ancient Egypt in film – An Index

Hey guys. I was perusing through Netflix’s catalogue the other day looking for documentaries on anything related to ancient Egypt and I found their selection to be pretty dismal. It got me wondering about how often Hollywood has incorporated Egyptian history in their films, and about how accurate their representations might have been. I decided to check it out online and found this really comprehensive website listing a ton of movies with ancient Egyptian themes. Naturally, most of them are about mummy’s that apparently frightened everyone throughout the midcentury during Hollywood’s silver screen years, but it appears that during the turn of the century the silent films had romanticized the notion of reincarnation and portrayed ancient Egypt with distinctly different  themes. Still, these campy flicks can be fun (especially if you think of the mummy’s as pharaohs that haven’t yet read their pyramid text’s, and therefore have no idea what they’re supposed to do in the afterlife). Anyway, this website http://www.ancientegyptfilmsite.nl/ is pretty neat, and I recommend Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955).

    • Thanks for the recommendation, I found this site super cool. I really enjoyed the film u suggested too! I like that there is always a re-emergence of films that capture the classic mummy, (like the movie, The Mummy) its movies like these that spark the interest of the general public to the history of mummification!
